AI call scoring

AI call scoring transcribes a phone call and rates the conversation automatically — what the caller wanted, how urgent it was, whether it was real business, and how well it was handled. It replaces the manual call review that most businesses intend to do and never quite get round to.

The problem with reviewing calls by hand

Almost every business that records calls intends to listen back to them. Very few do it for long. A call takes as long to review as it took to happen, the manager who would do the reviewing is the busiest person in the building, and by the time anyone gets to a call the lead has either bought or gone elsewhere.

So the sample shrinks until it is meaningless, and it skews — people review the call that generated a complaint, not the twenty quiet ones where nobody asked for the business. AI scoring exists because reading every call is the only version of this that actually holds up week after week.

What a scored call looks like in practice

A tracked call arrives in the dashboard carrying a score out of ten, a short summary of what the caller wanted, the sentiment reading, the campaign and keyword that produced the call, the name of whoever answered, and a coaching note for them. The recording and the full transcript sit alongside it, so any score can be checked against the actual conversation rather than taken on trust.

The scores then roll up two ways. By person, they become a scorecard showing who is handling calls well and who needs help. By campaign, they answer the question that justifies the advertising: not how many calls a keyword produced, but how many good ones.

Common questions

What is AI call scoring and how is it different from manual call review?

AI call scoring transcribes a recorded phone call and automatically rates the conversation — what the caller wanted, how urgent it was, whether it looked like genuine business, and how well the person answering handled it. The output is a score plus a written summary, attached to the call record within moments of the call ending.

The difference from manual review is coverage, not cleverness. A manager reviewing calls by hand realistically listens to a handful a week, chosen more or less at random, days after the fact. AI scoring reads every call, applies the same criteria to all of them, and does it while the conversation is still worth acting on. Manual QA gives you depth on a tiny sample; AI scoring gives you the whole picture and tells you which calls actually deserve a human listen.

What data does AI call scoring analyse in a phone conversation?

AI call scoring analyses the transcript of the conversation and the metadata around it. From the transcript it reads what the caller asked for, the stated urgency, whether a next step was agreed, whether contact details were captured, and the sentiment on both sides. From the metadata it reads how long the call lasted, how quickly it was answered, who answered it, and which advertising campaign produced it.

CallTrace combines both. A call can be short and still score well if the caller booked an appointment, and long but score badly if nobody asked for the business. Sentiment is scored separately from lead quality on purpose — a caller who is anxious about their situation is still a strong lead, whereas a caller annoyed with your team is a different problem entirely, and collapsing those two into one number hides both.

How accurate is AI call scoring for sales quality assessment?

Accuracy depends on two separate things: how cleanly the call was transcribed, and how well the scoring criteria match your business. Transcription is the larger practical constraint — heavy background noise, a poor mobile line, several people talking over each other, or strong regional accents all degrade the transcript, and a weak transcript produces a weak score.

CallTrace does not publish a single headline accuracy figure, because one number across every accent, line quality and industry would be misleading. The design assumption is that scoring is a triage layer, not a verdict: it surfaces the calls worth a human listen and gives you the recording and full transcript alongside every score, so any individual judgement can be checked in seconds. Treat it as a way to review all of your calls quickly rather than as a replacement for hearing the important ones.

Can AI call scoring be used for sales coaching in the UK?

Yes, and coaching is where most of the value sits. After each call, CallTrace produces specific suggestions for the person who took it — what worked, what to say differently next time, and the exact follow-up to send. Team scorecards then show who answered, who gave their name, who asked for the appointment, and who needs support.

UK businesses using it for coaching should be clear with staff that calls are recorded and analysed, and should cover it in their staff privacy notice. Employee monitoring is regulated under UK GDPR, and the Information Commissioner’s Office publishes specific guidance on monitoring workers that is worth reading before you switch it on. The practical version: tell your team what is recorded, why, and who can hear it.

How does CallTrace compare to enterprise agent-assist platforms like Cresta or Balto?

Cresta and Balto are US-headquartered, enterprise-focused real-time agent-assist platforms. They are built for large contact centres with many seats, sold through an enterprise sales process, and priced accordingly — neither publishes standard pricing publicly, so a fair per-seat comparison is not something CallTrace can honestly put in a table.

CallTrace is aimed at the other end of the market: UK businesses running a handful of phones, where the person answering is a fee earner or a receptionist rather than a trained contact-centre agent. It is £99 per month for scoring and coaching after the call, £199 with live on-screen prompts during it, monthly rolling, priced in pounds. If you are staffing a hundred-seat centre, look at the enterprise platforms. If you are a firm of twelve people wanting to know which keyword produced the call and whether it was handled well, that is what CallTrace was built for.
